Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was beautiful painter who used her artwork to express the sadness that surrounded her.  But more on that later...

Friday night, Amy wanted to check out a huge new maternity store in Cherry Hill, so we picked up Melissa and took a ride.  She got a few things but is still looking for an outfit for my parent's anniversary party and maybe for our baby's bris.  We went to the Silver Diner for dinner and I treated myself to a vanilla milkshake.

Saturday we did the 4d ultrasound then had lunch with both our families.  Then Amy and I went to see a couple of more houses.  One of them was pretty close to what we want.  We may have to look into it a little further.  I think the problem is I really don't like any of the houses in the areas we are looking, we may have to look elsewhere.  Saturday night, we met Dave and Danielle and Rob at the movies in Warrington.  We saw Iron Man.  It was very good.  Amy, who knew nothing about Iron Man, really enjoyed it.  Robert Downey Jr. was great.  We then went for a late night bite at the Cheesecake Factory in Willow Grove.  We generally love it there, but we had a bad experience.  The place was dirty and the food was not fresh.  Maybe it was because it was so late, I hope that's all it was.  We had fun talking until late.

Sunday morning I had breakfast with Amy's family at Olympia Diner in Huntingdon Valley.  It was packed with people celebrating Mother's Day.  Then Amy, Melissa and their mom went to the Art Museum to see the Frida Kahlo Exhibit.  The place was packed!  We had reserved tickets but we still had to wait in line.

We had to park down the hill in the back.  They are building a huge extension of the museum back there so there is less parking now.

Some views from out front.

The baby was about to get some culture!

Melissa had never run up the stairs like Rocky so she did!

As I said, Frida was a sad genius.  The exhibit was designed really well and everyone got a head set to wear.  As you walked up to each painting or photo, there were many photos of her and her family and friends, you would hear an explanation of the work in the context of what was going on in her life at the time.  Very interesting.  Would not have been the same without it.  She had such a love hate relationship with her on again off again husband Diego Rivera, it really showed in her work.  The picture above was painted during her first divorce with him.  It shows the Frida Diego loved on the right and the woman she had become on the left.   She also was injured terribly in a bus accident when she was young and never fully recovered.  Much of her work expresses her emotional and physical pain.   We were all moved by the exhibit, well worth seeing.

The girls were tired at that point but we how often do you get to the Art Museum?  Plus I wanted to see my favorite Monet.  It's so amazing that it's just sitting there and you can get so close to it.

Van Gogh's Sunflowers

Henri Rousseau - Always liked these too.

Amy with her Renoir.

Sunday night, both our families met for dinner at Bistro Romano in the City.  We had a very nice time but I forgot to take pictures!
