Fort Sumter

I promise, this is the last of the Charleston pics.  Last Monday, we woke early and said goodbye to the Wentworth Mansion.  We had a very lovely stay there and would stay there again.
We found a French crepe place for breakfast.
The owner was from France and he was a character.
We went to the port to take a boat ride to Fort Sumter.  The aquarium was next door.
There's our boat!
It filled up with the Myrtle Beach third grade!
Amy felt like she was back in school.
It was about a 20 minute ride to Fort Sumter, which is an island.
We got a history lesson on the way.  This is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.
It used to be 50 feet tall on all sides but was knocked down to one level during the war.

The black parts were added during the Spanish American War.

The cannons were original.

All the bricks were hand made by slaves so all were different.

This was the original flag that the Federal Army flew over the fort while it was taken by the Confederate troops.  The troops let them keep the flag as they surrendered and left.

Of course we had to do some more shopping before we headed to the airport.
Amy got some shoes.
I got a whole new wardrobe!
Even Ariel's doll Rebecca got some nice outfit!
We came, we saw, we ate, we shopped, we slept, we successfully got away for a weekend!
From the first row to the last row.  This was one tiny plane.  12 rows of 2 and 2.
Everyone was thrilled to see us when we got home.
